Mindfully Minimal: Integrating Lighting into a Minimalist Kitchen
The kitchen component of the renovation at Wellington Crescent allowed for the introduction of integrated lighting, complementing the updated space in a subtle yet significant way.
In a unique approach, these homeowners opted for an open shelving component, where the bottom shelf serves as both a functional shelf and the valence of the adjacent cabinets. Since this shelving display is located directly above the kitchen sink, it was crucial that this natural focal point be designed with purpose. Whether intended primarily for display or for storage and convenience, it was imperative that this feature include thoughtfully integrated lighting that enhanced the space without distracting from its minimalism.
Historically, integrated lighting consisted primarily of pot lights. While this method works perfectly in some spaces, this Scandinavian-style kitchen features thin parallel lines that are best complemented by a similar style of lighting. The soft light within the shelves, provided by integrated strip lighting, creates a wash effect over the glazed tile, highlighting its texture and celebrating the natural idiosyncrasies of the material.
The under-cabinet lighting, another important element in this kitchen, is both tasteful and practical. It provides clear visibility for tasks like food preparation, where sharp objects or hot surfaces are involved, enhancing both functionality and safety.
In an environment so inherently minimal, what seems like a simple detail becomes increasingly difficult to execute. This project required custom millwork to incorporate the light strips as seamlessly as possible. While anyone can attach a strip of LEDs to the bottom of a cabinet, it’s the quality of design and materials that sets this particular detail apart. When you step back and examine the overall aesthetic of this kitchen, it’s clear why integrated strip lights were the perfect choice.
